Fallecido en 2001, estudió en el Trinity College de Cambridge. En 1961 publicó "Robert Adam and his Circle in Edinburgh and Rome", obra con la que obtuvo el Bannister Fletcher Prize y la Alice Devis Hitchcock Medal. Con Nikolas Pevsner y Hugh Honour escribió "The Penguin Dictionary of Architecture and Landscape Architecture" (1966) y con Hugh Honour "The Penguin Dictionary of Decorative Arts" (1977) y "The Venetian Hours of Henry James, Whistler, and Sargent" (1991).
